Hidden Places

The San Diego River runs fifty-two miles through San Diego County, starting at its headwaters in the mountains of the backcountry and flowing west until it empties into the Pacific Ocean. Throughout history it has been the home of Kumeyaay Native American tribes, and its own precious ecosystem.

These images were taken at a little-known area of the San Diego River where it empties into Kumeyaay Lake. During late autumn the cottonwoods, willows and sycamores that grace its banks drop their leaves into the river creating carpets on the waters. The atmosphere here is quiet, almost secret, a place a child would delight in - a peaceful, hidden place of dreams.

Sheltered River

Be taught now, among the trees and rocks, how the discarded is woven into shelter, learn the way things hidden and unspoken slowly proclaim their voice in the world.
